Garden Party Rug 

50% Poly cotton material, 50% cotton string, weaving, machine sewing.  

 84 x 64 x 1 cm 

I learned to weave from my Grandmother, as we would spend summers at her country home in Wisconsin during my teenage years. I quickly fell in love with the rhythm of weaving and diversity of colours and textures. In 2011, I gratefully inherited both of her double-harness floor looms when she stopped weaving at age 96. Since that time I have added another large loom to my studio, and have continued to work with the same techniques and joy that she did. All of my items are one-of-a-kind. With my "fluffy rugs" I have developed a funky style that is unique to me, and with my cotton rugs I carry on the timeless tradition of original 'rag rugs' that my Gramma sold her craft shop for many years. I enjoy experimenting with different warp methods to create diversity and visual interest, and simple sewing skills make the tote-bags a truly unique piece of functional fashion. - Emily Gillies, artist
