Lunar New Year is a time of gathering, sharing, and abundance. Every household welcomes guests with candies and treats, a gesture of warmth and prosperity. With The Unbearable Catness of Candy Jar, I wanted to capture that tradition through a playful and tactile lens, transforming a simple candy dish into a whimsical stack of personalities.
Each tier of the jar—a cat, a panda, and a bear—brings a sense of joy and lightheartedness to a familiar ritual. Using porcelain, I combined wheel-throwing with hand-building and carving techniques to create distinct yet harmonious forms. The stacking structure mirrors the layers of celebration, connection, and sweetness that define the holiday.
By merging functionality with storytelling, this piece invites interaction and a moment of delight. Whether filled with treats or left empty, it serves as a reminder of the joy in sharing, the warmth of tradition, and the charm of playfulness in everyday objects. - Bear Won, artist
