My Mother's Garden
Gale Steck Memorial Award for Excellence in Craft for an Emerging Artist
Recycled cotton, second hand notions and trims; Botanical printing, pattern drafting, sewing
119 x 71 x 25 cm
This garment's emblematic of my love of fashion and nature, while recognizing the tension between the two. It’s constructed of repurposed bedsheets and dyed by hand with botanical printing, using locally foraged matter from my mother's garden. Using repurposed materials, I subvert the system that exploits resources and labour in textile manufacturing. Using local organic material for printing, I honor nature’s gifts in an intentional way. Harvesting plants from my Mother’s garden gives the garment personal significance. This dress exemplifies how clothing can be more than just a product that’s pushed in an industry that overly exploits, extracts and exhausts. - Courtney Pederson, artist
