Summer/Daylily and Dandelion
Juror's Choice Award
Fibre (daylily leaves, dandelion steams); Cordmaking, lacemaking, basketry
12 x 43 x 43 cm
Summer/Daylily and Dandelion is part of my ongoing exploration of memory and the ways in which it can be stored and retrieved. Dried daylily leaves were made into cord, then woven together using a lace-making technique, reflecting the delicate nature of the original plant material. The resulting square was bound with dandelion stem cord to create a basket. The only tool involved was a blade for cutting. The finished basket is not functional in the normal sense, serving instead as a receptacle for the recollection of a particular time. It is meant to be held in the viewer’s hands. - Cathryn Miller, artist
