Leslie Potter Award for Excellence in Sculpture
Clay; wheel thrown, hand-built, assembled, wood fired
50 x 23 x 12 cm
"The Watcher” is a wood fired sculpture, and its rich, unique surfaces result from flame and wood ash dancing around the piece for several intense and physical days of firing. Inspired by robots in popular culture, “The Watcher” reflects my unease with society’s willingness to accept and welcome public surveillance into everyday life. “The Watcher” is playful, almost toylike, an object that could be innocuously displayed in a home or business, much like many surveillance cameras are. However, the “eyes” in the body that look in different directions are meant to disquiet. Is someone watching and why? - Paula Cooley, artist
