Two birds, one stone
Limestone; hand-carved with hammer, chisel and riffler
23 x 20 x 20 cm
This piece is carved to a higher level of detail, and smaller scale, than is usually applied to Indiana limestone for architectural design. Two sides are raw, exhibiting break lines generated when the block was sectioned for masonry. These bring stone’s utilitarian uses into conversation with its generative potential as the viewer rounds the sculpture toward its figuratively detailed sides. Two birds face one another over an egg, drawing gaze to a focal point, and hinting at emergence of a third, animate, perspective on geologic materiality. - Sandy Marie Bonny, artist
