Cindy Hoppe, Biggar
“From Scratch” resonates with me on several levels. I dye my fabrics and gather materials from thrift stores and inherited stash to start building my world. There are many elements of surprise in the dye pot, the random meeting of scraps on the floor in the studio that inspire a connection, a photo from my neighbourhood that may begin a series; these begin the process. From there a journey begins that has its own rhythms and discoveries until a piece is finished. This series of work began as the last remnant of canola yellow wool that has been my friend for many years of sewing, combined with as many big sky pieces as I could find on my shelf. My personal goal for 2020 was to go big or go home, so have challenged myself to do that; to find some new mark making that incudes my friend the sewing machine and hand embroidery.
